BEFORE2030 - A LIVABLE FUTURE For people, planet, and all life
CONTINUE TO REDUCE FOSSIL FUEL USE
This is the time the fossil fuel/oil industry has dreaded for the last 50 years of their mischievous existence. They have marketed, lied and cheated to retain their polluting product’s dominance – the reckoning is nigh! And it is time to pay the real price for the product, no more externals, (outsourcing side-effect costs to other sectors of the economy).
“Air pollution from transportation sources caused an estimated 74,00 deaths in India in 2015, out of which two-thirds, (66%) could be attributed to tailpipe emissions from diesel vehicles on the road,” according to estimates in the global report by researchers from the International Council on Clean Transportation (CCT), George Washington University, and University of Colorado Boulder. And, of course, the burning of fossil fuels has caused such high concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere that it’s leading to what most scientist consider catastrophic climate change.
In, Unlocking Sustainable Cities by Paul Chatterton, 2019, informs us: “Moreover, the sheer amount of public subsidies that go into maintaining car culture is staggering… (Which translates to, we are subsidizing climate change!) Car culture therefore, is one of the key drivers pushing the finite global biosphere towards its limits…Unlocking alternative transport futures can only go hand in hand with a shift in planning and zoning, eroding the need for mass, wasteful commuting from neighborhood to work zones. Central areas need to be dispersed, work needs to be more broadly distributed, and food, leisure and retail needs rescaling and decoupling from car use. Starting with the car may seem parochial, but it points to the multiple steps unlocking real change for sustainable cities.”
I think this applies to electric cars and computer driven cars also. Can we imagine life without the car? Go on try. What would it look like? Lots of redesign of everything, you’ll need to go deep, and, deeper still. It’s only about 100 years that this infernal combustion engine has been around. Our existence, now, literally depends on ending its reign. 40% of city space is dedicated to the car and they sit idle 95% of the time!
Al Gore quote: “They (fossil fuel industry) have used fraud and falsehoods on an industrial scale. And by lavishly funding their legacy networks of political and economic power, they have captured the policymaking process in too many countries around the world.”
The misinformation campaigns of the fossil fuel industry are heavily financed to the tune of tens of millions of dollars a year. Imagine that, no wonder we are where we are, 50 years behind the times by my reckoning. Does this reach the criteria of evil, or just immoral? When my self-reliant educated children reach sufficient numbers, watch out.
