BEFORE2030 - A LIVABLE FUTURE For people, planet, and all life
About
Good day. I’m Tony Buck, concerned citizen about the sustainability of our age. I’ve had various work experience in my tender 73 years. I didn’t get to university, my parents didn’t value it. So, I ended up doing a five-year apprenticeship as a Toolmaker with a Rolls Royce company, mainly working in aerospace. I finished that at 21, then travelled extensively through my twenties: Europe, Africa from north to south, USA, Central America, Sri Lanka and India, sometimes working in engineering environments. From 30 onward I’ve mainly been self-employed in the home improvement field, taking a few side roads into public radio program production and the publishing industry. I’m a lifelong learner. And because I’ve spent most of my life as a problem solver, that pattern is ingrained in me. Also, a lifelong edible gardener, which led to becoming a Penn State Master Gardener and doing a Permaculture Design Certificate and incorporating both into my practices. So, as I become aware about the state of our world, and the problems we’re facing, my brain goes into problem solving mode, and this is how I got to make the website Before2030.org. It’s a subject bibliography of sorts. Look at this graphic of what’s called the Overton window. Some of you may be familiar with it. It was conceived by political scientist Joseph Overton to help us understand policy. Most politicians are in the middle, as you can see Before2030 is on the periphery. So, there’s no need to think during your exploration of the site, “Oh, poor Tony, doesn’t he know NONE of this is going to happen?’ I’m realistic about that. However, it was Milton Friedman who said: “Only a crisis - actual or perceived - produces real change. When that crisis occurs, the actions that are taken depend on the ideas that are lying around. That, I believe, is our basic function: to develop alternatives to existing policies, to keep them alive and available until the politically impossible becomes the politically inevitable.” And this is an attempt to put ideas out there in case they’re needed. And, by the way, most of these ideas are not mine, many highly educated people are working on all these concepts. And my problem-solving brain just recognizes that some of these might be the answer to our problems. On the relevant web pages, you’ll find references for further study if you wish to follow up on an idea. This effort is a labor of love.
