BEFORE2030 - A LIVABLE FUTURE For people, planet, and all life
DISCOURAGE FASHION IN ALL PRODUCTS
If ever there was a mass mesmerism among humans, I think fashion would be in the top ten. Look at your clothing, do you wear the mark of a slave? I ask this of high-school students I mentor. Their faces show concern about what’s coming next. That swish, on the clothing, is the mark of a slave. Why? Well, if you’re a young person there’s a lot of peer pressure that demands you have to wear the swish – does that sound like freedom? Their sneakers also have to be a certain brand, but I show them that I wear ‘boe-boes’ as we call them in my neighborhood, sneakers with no brand name, bought more cheaply from places like discount stores. I tell them you’re not allowed to wear these, I can, I’m free and you are slaves to peer pressure and brand names.
Not just clothes, but cars, cell phones, etc. Again, this leads to nonsensical over-production and waste/pollution because along with the above, the manufacturer can make us jettison our current products for the new version, even though they weren’t worn out.
Further info:
The movie, The True Cost, and many other documentaries inform us why this is so important.
The movie, Fast fashion: The shady world of cheap clothing.
