BEFORE2030 - A LIVABLE FUTURE For people, planet, and all life
CURTAIL ADVERTISING
As a consequence of the authentic sustainability efforts that we will be forced to adopt, this curtailment will happen, even if public pressure doesn’t speed it up beforehand.
Imagine, if you can, traveling through the US in the year 1500 CE, before most of the European invaders (settlers) arrive. Apart from looking at virtually pristine landscapes wherever you went, there would be no advertising. No billboards and no phones, so no ads on the phone. You wouldn’t be bombarded every second of the day with insidious advertising, someone trying to persuade you to buy their product, someone determined to mine your wallet and fill theirs. Advertising appears to be bent on destroying our peace, always trying to dissatisfy, pressure us. Say no, I am content.
I don’t think we realize what this continual bombardment does to our psyches. For myself, I have observed that it creates a kind of fight or flight reaction always right below the surface. Surely, it’s a form of attack, a continual con.
If this new world moves forward, an aware public will pressure ad agencies to reform.
I mentioned a de-witched state of mind earlier. This is where it’s needed most. When enough people become de-witched by the illusions of the modern world, with all its fascinating technologies and special effects, and we realize that every human world is just the projection of someone’s imagination, we can ask ourselves, what kind of future world do I want to live in?
It doesn’t have to be dystopian. Although most people’s minds go to this when asked about the future. From my observations my billboard reads, “Welcome to the future you had trouble imagining, because you were veiled by the strength of what you thought was a reality. Fortunately, others have been working on something we think you’ll come to love. It’s about you and your love of family, friends and community. And about you being in charge of your time, with the ability to use most of it how you choose.”
